Common Pleco (Hypostomus plecostomus)
The Common Pleco is a hardy and popular freshwater algae-eating catfish known for its impressive size and ability to help keep aquariums clean. While they are excellent algae grazers when young, they require a very large aquarium as they mature. Common Plecos are best suited for experienced aquarists with spacious tanks.
Care Level: ✅ Easy

Minimum Tank Size: ✅ 125 gallons (475 L)
Water Temperature: ✅ 72–82°F (22–28°C)

Common Plecos are primarily nocturnal and appreciate driftwood, caves, and other hiding places. Driftwood is an important part of their diet and aids digestion. Although they help control algae, they should not rely on algae alone for nutrition and require a varied diet to stay healthy.
Please Note: Common Plecos grow very large and are not suitable for small aquariums. Be sure you can provide an appropriately sized tank before purchasing.
